On the first of May we dance up the sun, a tradition that’s been going on since the 1930s when some morris dancers in Oxford decided it would be a nice complement to the morning madrigals sung by college choirs – though more general morris dancing on May Day, the traditional start of summer, has been going on a lot longer!
